Saturday Marks Start of Girl Scout Cookie Sales

New names for some familiar cookies are on the order lists as troops hit the neighborhoods in Fenton and High Ridge.

Start making space in the freezer, it’s time to start stocking up on Girl Scout Cookies.

Starting Saturday local Girl Scouts will be taking orders for perennial favorites like Thin Mints at $3.50 a box, but look out for the new cookies for sale. The Girl Scout Council in the St. Louis area will be using a different baker than in years past. That means a name change for some of the more familiar cookies.

Thin Mints are still Thin Mints, but Samoas, a donut-shaped cookie covered in coconut and drizzled in caramel and chocolate, are now called Caramel deLites. Do-Si-Dos are now simply Peanut Butter Sandwiches, and Peanut Butter Patties will more accurately describe the popular chocolate-covered and peanut-butter-smothered Tagalong.

New to the menu this year are three new cookies. First comes the Thanks-A-Lot, a fudge-covered shortbread cookie printed with a “Thank You.” Also new is the Lemonade, also a shortbread cookie, but coated with lemon icing. Those who are a fan of Biscoff, a type of spice cookie, there are Shout-Outs, which are emblazoned by motivational phrases like “Inspire” and “Lead.”

The Girl Scouts' goal isn’t just to tempt taste buds with cookie sales. They want to reach cookie customers with a message; that is, that Girl Scouts support activities encouraging leadership.

“Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place,” said Janet Vigen-Levy, marketing and communications manager of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri.

Proceeds from cookie sales are split among the local troops that sold them and their local councils.

The Girl Scout Council has brought cookie orders into the digital age. Troop members and council staff can log into Snap, an online application specifically designed for managing cookie sales.

Cookie orders will be taken until Jan. 30, and will be delivered beginning Feb. 23. Those who miss the window for placing an order, will be able to purchase cookies from Girl Scout troops at booths in front of local grocery stores by the end of March.
