Daily Dose: Leap Day Proposals Possible as Marriage-Minded Women Have Chance to Pop the Question

Proposals: Men in Fenton and High Ridge may want to be on the lookout today as Leap Day is the traditional date when women may propose marriage to men. According to customs that date back centuries, a man who refuses a woman's proposal must pay a penalty. In many European countries, especially in the upper classes of society, tradition dictates that any man who refuses a woman's proposal on February 29 has to buy her 12 pairs of gloves. The intention is that the woman can wear the gloves to hide the embarrassment of not having an engagement ring. During the Middle Ages there were laws governing this kind of stuff.

Police work: Residents are given an opportunity to learn more about local police work and law enforcement techniques at a Citizen Police Academy sponsored by the and West County precincts off the St. Louis County Police Department. Classes begin this evening at 7 p.m. and continue for eight consecutive Wednesdays. The classes are free and are open to all St. Louis County residents. Advanced registration is required.
