Cub Scouts Burn Rubber at Stanton Elementary

Fenton's Cub Scout Pack 778 learn about teamwork at their annual soap box derby race.

Cub Scouts from Stanton Elementary in Fenton put their mechnical and wood working know how to the test as they raced home made soap box derby cars in an annual Pack event. Each den of boys built their race car as a group project, with a little help from their dads.

The boys took turns driving and launching the cars, with each scout getting behind the wheel several times.

Chris Hurst, an assistant Wolf Den leader, said that most of the boys built their cars the first year they entered the Cub Pack, as 6 to 7 year old Tigers. Some groups built their car from scratch and kept it year after year with only a few modifications. Dens are free to build a new car if they like, and many are made from parts recycled from retired cars passed down to younger scouts.

The race took place on Saturday on the Stanton Elementary parking lot, which has a steep hill. Two cars raced at a time, in lanes marked out by cones. Older scouts from Boy Scout 778 volunteered their morning to help catch the cars at the end of the race and push them back to the top of the hill.
