Beat the Back-to-School Lunch Box Blues: Try These Fun and Healthy Recipies

Are your kids bored with the standard peanut butter and jelly sandwiches? Try these tasty options instead.

Whether you're looking for something fun to put in your kids' lunch boxes or you need a special after-school snack, you can help your kids beat the with these easy-to-prepare treats.

You'll like them because they're good for their growing bodies, but your kids will love them because they taste great. Pack them in lunches or serve them as after-school snacks.

Turkey and Apple Rollups

  • 1-2 tablespoons cream cheese, low fat
  • 1 tortilla (8 inch)
  • 2 slices Boar's Head Maple Glazed Turkey Breast
  • 1/4 cup fresh baby spinach
  • 1/2 medium-sized apple, cut into thin strips


Spread cream cheese on one side of tortilla. Place turkey slices evenly over tortilla, then add spinach leaves and sliced apple. Roll tortilla tightly, tucking ingredients as you roll. Slice wraps in half diagonally and serve. Makes 1 serving.

Peanut Butter and Apple Crescents

  • 1 can (8-ounces) Pillsbury refrigerated crescent rolls
  • 1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter
  • 1 tablespoon apricot preserves
  • 1 small baking apple, 8 slices
  • 1 egg, beaten


Separate dough into 8 triangles. Spread each triangle with peanut butter and preserves. Place an apple slice on short end of each triangle and roll up and place on a parchment lined or ungreased baking sheet. Brush lightly with beaten egg. Bake at 375˚F for 12-13 minutes. Makes 8 sandwiches.

Turkey Kabobs

  • 2 slices Boar's Head Ovengold Turkey Breast, sliced 1/4-inch thick
  • 2 slices Boar's Head Yellow Cheddar Cheese, sliced 1/4-inch thick
  • 12 grapes, white seedless
  •  3-inch wooden skewers or long toothpicks*


Cut turkey and cheese into cubes. Place a cube of turkey on a toothpick, followed by a cube of cheese and then a grape. Repeat with remaining items. Arrange on a plate and serve. Makes about 12 kabobs

*Editor’s note: Instead of toothpicks, try using pretzel sticks.

Pepperoni Pizza Wraps

  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce
  • 4 (7-8-inch) flour tortillas
  • 4 ounces shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 (3.5-ounce) package pepperoni slices


Heat oven to 350˚F. Spread pizza sauce evenly over tortilla within 1-inch of edges. Sprinkle each evenly with cheese. Arrange 1/4 of the pepperoni slices down center of each tortilla. Roll up each tortilla wrap each in foil. Bake 10–15 minutes or until heated and cheese is melted. Makes 4 sandwiches.
