American Legion National Commander Visits Manchester Legion Post 208

American Legion National Commander, Dan Dellinger paid a visit to Manchester’s Walter H. LePere American Legion Post 208 last Tuesday, November 5, 2013.  This is believed to be the first time that a National Commander has visited Post 208 in its 94-year history, and it is considered to be a signal honor for the Post.

Legionnaires in attendance included members from American Legion Missouri State Headquarters, and American Legion Districts 10, 11 & 12 Headquarters.  Post 208 Commander Mike Beasley opened the meeting with a short history of Post 208, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2019.  He then introduced American Legion Missouri State Commander, Thomas Goodin, who after a few remarks introduced the main speaker, National Commander Dellinger.

The National Commander emphasized the need for recruiting new members to replace the older members who are being lost because of old age and other infirmities.  He stressed the necessity for Legion members to keep Congress informed about the needs of veterans, as well as for their widows, widowers and children.  The Commander accented the importance of his National Emergency Fund, which is used to assist veterans and their families during times of national disasters such as tornadoes, floods  and earthquakes.  The American Legion’s National Emergency Fund paid out over $750,000 last year.
