Saturday, August 6, at approximately 12:15 pm, the Chrysler Water Tower was toppled. A wedge was cut into its base and it was pulled over like a giant dead tree. Mark Seemeyer, owner of Joe Clark's, and I stood side by side sadly photographing the last moments of this long time Fenton landmark and Chrysler Plant symbol.

Ferd, You witness daily, and now document, the passing of St. Louis' landmarks. Physical icons that were everyday reminders of a city's growth. When a familiar landmark that evokes memories and serves as a beacon for our need to know exactly where we are, suddenly disappears, we lose our sense of where we are and where we've been. New landmarks are created and the city evolves.
Fortunately for you, ( and us ) these landmarks pass before your eyes and lens'. Since I left St. Louis in 1979, many of those familiar icons have vanished, new highways, housing developments, strip malls, bridges, and buildings have replaced them.....I don't even recognize my old city anymore. When I visit, I get lost...The landscape has changed dramatically in 32 years......So Ferd, keep up the good work. If they ever think about closing Ted Drewes, let me know......I'll have to race home to get one last "chocolate concrete"....

Every year when I was a kid, we would vacation at Lake of the Ozarks. Coming home each year, my mom would say "we're home, there's the Chrysler plant". I'lll be 60 this year and I still hear that in my head when I drive by there. Another landmark gone, but documented. Great pictures, Ferd.

My father moved us to Fenton in 1966 to be closer to his work. He was a truck driver for Cassens Transport Company. They were the company that hauled and delivered cars for the the Chrysler plant. The tower was something that we could see in the distance from our kitchen window in our home located in the Bentley Manor subdivision. Everyone either knew someone or had a family member(s) that worked at the plant or hauled cars for the plant. The last time I was back in MO visiting friends and family it was so surreal to drive by and see that lonesome tower. It is really going to be a sadder sight not to see it at all. Thank God for memories.

I had a 45 year history at the Chrysler complex as and employee and consultant and came to know and estimated 100,000 wonderful tax paying Americans in those years. I stay in touch with as many as I can and still get together through different retiree gatherings when in town. God bless all the Chrysler workers and suppliers that supported the complex. And thanks for the memories.

I have climbed to top thru the middle of the tower during daylight & at night & replaced a burnt outlight bulb ( 2 Bulbs) as North Guard Shack would call maintenance if 0nly saw one bulb burning as Wiess Airport was across road & I believe they didn't want a plane to crash down on them
