Star Trek: Into Darkness   Patch Blogger Mark Glass: **** It’s time again to boldly go...where tons of TV and movie cameras have gone before. Space. The final frontier. For context, this is the second feature film showing the original crew of the Enterprise in the beginning of their careers, in an alternate time line, allowing both overlaps and variations from the stories and characters that started the whole  franchise. That allows Benedict Cumberbatch (best known as a contemporary Sherlock Holmes…

The Great Gatsby   Patch Blogger Mark Glass: **½ This latest screen version of the classic novel is a mixed bag of assets and flaws. Director and co-writer Baz Lurhrmann ambitiously tries for a 3-D spectacle with several lavish party scenes that Busby Berkeley would have envied. He inserts bits of  anachronistically modern music into this 1922 setting. That worked beautifully in his Moulin Rouge, and hilariously in the opening joust of A Knight’s Tale, but feels …

Over the past four years Northwest has been nominated in a few categories and even took home the gold for choreography for "The Wizard of Oz" in 2010. If you haven’t seen the first two flicks, don’t start here. You’ll be missing too much backstory to get into the flow. The Company You Keep Patch Blogger Mark Glass: ** 1/2 Robert Redford suffers from a relatively mild case of Ego Excess Disorder, compared to other luminaries who direct and star in the same film. Barbra Streisand and Kevin Costner have much worse cases of the syndrome, which makes those films too long, too preachy or otherwise cloying, typically with cameras focused on the boss longer than the story requires. In Streisand’s case, backlighting and other …

Student Reviewer: Northwest Production Brings Fairy Tale to Life

Northwest High School rises to the occasion in production of "Beauty and the Beast."

By Brigitta Davis of Pattonville High School "Beauty and the Beast," the childhood favorite of many, receives a grown-up adaptation in the stage musical. New songs, more dialogue, and alternate character portrayals intrigue a familiar audience with a more complete view of the fairytale made famous by the Disney animated movie. Northwest High School rises to the occasion when taking on these challenges to make memorable and unique stage presentation. To many, Disney is responsible for the revitalization of Broadway, drawing millions back to the stage with song hits and storylines made popular by high-grossing films. Beauty and the Beast is no exception to his exceptional standard. With the iconic music of Alan Menken and lyrics of Tim Rice …
