The Most Popular Baby Names in Missouri

Explore our database of Missouri baby names from 1910 to 2011.

As the city's new mayor, Michael Polizzi may be the most popular guy in Fenton these days. But his first name has dropped in popularity ever since he was given it at birth.

A search of the data collected by the Social Security Administration, which has released baby name data for all 50 states and the District of Columbia shows that Michael, which was the most popular name for boys born in 1955, also shows the name has dropped to 9th in 2011, edged out by Landon, Ethan, Elijah, Logan, Aiden, Jackson, Liam, Jacob, Noah, William and Mason. 286 Michaels were born in 2011, compared to 2,321 in 1955.

If you're wondering about the name "Jefferson," as in Jefferson County, it's pretty rare. Five people were named Jefferson in Missouri in 1993, which is the most recent year with that baby name. The name's most popular years occurred in 1981 and 1924. Nine babies were named Jefferson each year. We were unable to find anyone, male or female, boys or girls, named Fenton.

The information comes from people who applied for Social Security cards and were born in the United States after 1879. As the SSA notes, "many people born before 1937 never applied for a Social Security card, so their names are not included in our data. For others who did apply, our records may not show the place of birth, and again their names are not included in our data."

So, what did Missouri moms and dads most often dub their babies in 1910, the first year of this database? Well, that would be William and Mary. And 101 years later, in 2011? Happy birthday to Mason and Emma.
