History: It was way back in 278 A.D. that today's namesake was beheaded by Emperor Claudius the Cruel in Imperial Rome for secretly performing marriages of young lovers. Claudius had banned marriage because he thought it made Ronan men unwilling to join the army because of the attachment to their wives and families. When the emperor discovered the covert ceremonies performed by Valentine, a priest, he ordered him beheaded.
Last-minute shopping: If you don't want to lose you head for not remembering Valentine's Day, there's always Walgreen's for a last-minute gift. For a bouquet of roses or carnations, you can try Fenton Flowers, Your Family Florist, in High Ridge or Dierbergs Market, and hope that all the roses haven't been snapped up.
Dinner: You'll have to hope dinner at Jilly's Cafe and Steakhouse isn't sold out as it features a heart-shaped rib-eye steak, shrimp scampi and chocolate covered strawberries in the dining room at the popular eatery. Call to make a reservation at 636-449-4500 and keep your fingers crossed that there is a romantic booth still available.
Craving dinner: You'll also need a reservation to get into a Hot and Steamy Valentine dinner event at the Fenton White Castle. Tables book quickly so you'll have to call as soon as possible. You get a free dessert and other mementos with you successful reservation. Here's the number: 636-305-1489.
Winter advisory: Regardless of how much snow accumulation there is near you, keep in mind that Northwest School have been called off and others may be by mid-day. Watch out for the kids who will be excited to try out their sleds for the first real sledding snow of the season.
