Fenton Woman Named 'Hero of Hope'

Patty Cook is among 27 cancer survivors honored by the American Cancer Society.

Patty Cook, of Fenton, recently was named a Hero of Hope by the American Cancer Society. Cook and 27 other cancer survivors and caregivers received the honor for their exemplary involvement with the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, their significant contributions to cancer control, and their impact in the lives of others, according to a news release from the Society
Cook was first diagnosed with breast cancer 13 years ago. In 2010 she faced breast cancer again, in the other breast.
Cook found a way to fight back against cancer with her family and her community through Relay For Life.
“I was inspired by the power of people coming together for a common cause,” Cook said. “The experience of cancer can be an isolating one as we focus on our own experience and process of healing. Relay For Life is a powerful way to keep life in perspective, keep hope and inspiration alive, be of service to others, and help to end this disease.”
Society staff recognized her fight and her willingness to give back. Her role as a Hero of Hope will take her across the state as a Society spokesperson.
“Patty has been a symbol of hope and a courageous supporter of others fighting cancer,” said American Cancer Society staff member Sara Downard. “She is a great example of why we continue to Relay.”
